When it comes to international travel, Asia offers some of the most eclectic and affordable destinations in the entire world. Looking for affordable adventure? You’ve come to the right place.
If your goal is to score a travel bargain while still being surrounded by exotic scenery and incredible culture, an Asian vacation is just for you. That said, it can be hard to pinpoint where to visit first. The Asian continent is massive and home to some of the world’s most popular countries including China, Thailand, Indonesia, India, and more.
With so many options to choose from, it may be difficult to figure out what destination is right for you. However, if you’re on a budget, Asia has a bevy of affordable (and stunning) locations.
The 5 Most Affordable Places to Visit in Asia
#1: Bangladesh
As far as affordable destinations in Asia go, you can’t get much better than Bangladesh. If you’re looking for an offbeat yet energetic adventure, the country is the ideal place for you and promises to be one of the cheapest trips you’ll ever take.
When it comes to things to see and do, Bangladesh doesn’t disappoint. Not only is the country home to the largest mangrove forest on Earth — called the Sundarbans — but it also offers Cox’s Bazar; the longest stretch of beach in the world. Not to mention, you can also explore historic temples (in Puthia), ancient ruins (in Guar), and much more.
Daily Recommended Budget: 4,000 BDT (Roughly $47.40 USD)
What You’ll Get For Your Money: High-end hotel rooms and amazing food
#2: Vietnam
Where else in the world could you get a bowl of pho for around $1.70 USD? Vietnam is a paradise for travelers on a budget. For as little as $40 USD a day (including accommodation), you can enjoy incredible vistas and backpacking opportunities mixed with a rich culture and delicious food.
The cheapest Vietnamese city has to be in Hanoi; where you’ll find some of the least expensive beer (called bia hoi) in the world, along with inexpensive dorms and private rooms. But don’t let the price fool you — just because prices are low doesn’t mean that your experiences will be cheap. That said, many Western travelers note that it’s nearly impossible to break the bank at many of Vietnam’s most popular cities including Ho Chi Minh, Hoi An, Hue, and Sapa.
Daily Recommended Budget: 930,000 VND (Roughly $40 USD)
What You’ll Get For Your Money: Delicious vietnamese food dorm beds/private rooms, long-distance transportation, and more.
#3: Nepal
If you take Mount Everest and treks into the Himalayas out of the equation (some of which are multi-day excursions), Nepal is actually one of the cheapest destinations to visit in Asia.
Approximately $27 per day will get you spacious double rooms in a Kathmandu guesthouse, basic meals in budget-friendly restaurants, and maybe even a guided trek through some of Nepal’s most awe-inspiring mountainscapes. If you want to spend less on a trek, I recommend splitting the cost with a group of friends or family members.
Daily Recommended Budget: 3,000 NPR (Roughly $27 USD)
What You’ll Get For Your Money: Basic meals, double rooms in guesthouses, experienced trekking guides and more.
#4: Indonesia
Indonesia is a scenic-lovers dream come true. With volcanoes, gorgeous beaches, and nature surrounding nearly every nook and cranny, what more could you ask for? This array of breathtaking islands also boasts one of the most majestic temples, called Borobudur along with a range of contemporary cities.
In terms of what you’ll pay, it varies depending on where you choose to visit, but all-in-all Indonesia remains one of the most budget-friendly countries in all of Southeast Asia. For the best bang for your buck, I recommend keeping your stay to only a few islands, like Bali, Sumatra, or Lombok. Incredible food on these islands can be had for about $1.70 USD, and you might be able to find comfortable lodging at guest houses for only $2.10 USD per night.
Daily Recommended Budget: 435,000 IDR (Roughly $30 USD)
What You’ll Get For Your Money: Food, incredible vistas, and comfortable rooms in guest houses.
#5 India
By far one of the most diverse countries — not just in Asia, but in the world — India has something to offer for everyone. This is why I recommend it to all of my fellow wanderers. With rich cultural experiences, stunning architecture, unique cuisine, and vibrant markets, India is a country you’ll want to explore.
In terms of hotspots, I highly suggest you visit New Delhi, Goa, or Darjeeling. The best part about India though is how little you’ll spend to vacation there. Dorm beds are just $5.80 USD per night and the country has plenty of budget-friendly cuisine to keep you going.
Daily Recommended Budget: 2,500 INR (Roughly $36 USD)
What You’ll Get For Your Money: Dorm beds, street food, long-distance travel on sleeper trains, and more.
